Dequervains Tenosynovitis or “My Thumb Hurts Doc!”
People get thumb and wrist pain all the time.
The reason why is because we were born with an opposable thumb, to grab things. Wrist pain is frequently misdiagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome, or simply arthritis.
Surgeon Dr. Fritz de Quervain first recognized this condition in 1895, and first recognized it as inflammation at the base of the thumb, and many doctors will inject the base of the thumb, and in really painful unresponsive cases, advocate an artificial joint replacement at the base of the thumb.
Again, they mean well, but to a hammer, everything is a nail.
An osteopathic physician can properly diagnose your hand pain as Dequervains tenosynovitis by Palpitating the base of the thumb, and noting whether there are subtle dislocations at the base of the thumb. If so, these can be easily fixed with an osteopathic manipulation, which can be learned very easily by a qualified D.O. in the member section of this site.
